MBBS in Sikkim

Sikkim is a state situated in northeast India that is bordered by Bhutan, Nepal, and Tibet and is known as an area of dramatic landscapes. The name ‘Sikkim’ comes from the word su him which means ‘new house’. The capital of Sikkim is Gangtok. It is also home to alpine meadows, glaciers, varieties of wildflowers, and India’s highest mountain, Kangchenjunga which is 8,586m high. Sikkim was formed as a state on the 16th of May 1975. Sikkim’s culture is strongly influenced by the Tibetan culture that shows pre-Buddhist customs and the different tribes of Sikkim. They celebrate a two-day-long festival known as the Phanglhapsol festival which comes in the month of August and September. The  Phanglhapsol festival is celebrated in honor of Kangchenjunga by masked dancers. 

MBBS is an undergraduate degree course performed in the field of medicine and surgery. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or MBBS is five and half years degree that comprises of four and half year learning period and an internship of 1 year. After the successful completion of the course, a graduate can work in healthcare, hospitals, clinics, and research centers. Basically, to get into MBBS one needs to attempt the NEET exam with passing marks. It is an entrance exam for aspirants willing to get admission into MBBS. The exam is usually conducted once a year in an offline mode by the National Testing Agency.

Admission process for MBBS in Sikkim

Candidates willing to get admission to Sikkim Manipal University must obtain minimum qualifying marks as decided by the authority. Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) offers 150 seats to medical candidates wishing to get admission there. 

Counseling- The counseling for Sikkim Manipal University is done by the State Government of Sikkim for MBBS. The counseling for MBBS admission is done in an offline mode on the basis of availability of seats, merit rank, reservation criteria, and many other factors. As the seats are allotted, students are required to provide all their necessary documents for the further verification process.

Top government MBBS universities in Sikkim 

Sikkim has many states that offer different-different professional degrees but sadly Sikkim does not have any state that offers a government medical college for MBBS. According to the NMC’s report, there is only one medical college for MBBS  in Sikkim and that is also private. 

Top private MBBS universities in Sikkim

Sikkim Manipal Institute Of Medical Sciences of Gangtok is the only private institute for MBBS in Sikkim that is affiliated with the Sikkim Manipal University and is recognized by the MCI ( Medical Council of India). The college was established in 1997 and comprises 18 courses and 5 degrees. The university is approved by the NMC with a campus area of 25 acres. Sikkim Manipal Institute Of Medical Sciences offers various different courses for undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. Various courses such as MBBS, MS, MD, etc are available in the college.
