It was formally recognized as an Imperial State of the Holy Roman Empire in 1002 and became a kingdom in 1198. The Thirty Years' War was started by the Protestant Bohemian Revolt. The Habsburgs consolidated their rule after the Battle of the White Mountain. The Crown lands became a part of the Austrian Empire in 1806, when the Holy Empire was dissolved.
Czechoslovakia was the only country in Central and Eastern Europe to remain a parliamentary democracy throughout the entire interwar period. Following the Munich Agreement in 1938, Nazi Germany systematically took control of the Czech lands. In 1918, most of the Czech lands became part of the First Czechoslovak Republic after the collapse of Austria-Hungary following World War I. After a coup d’etat in 1948, Czechoslovakia became an Eastern Bloc communist state after being restored in 1945. During the Prague Spring in 1968, a Soviet-led invasion of the country stifled efforts to liberalize the economy and government. The Velvet Revolution ended communist rule in the country in November 1989. On January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia was disbanded, and the Czech Republic and Slovakia became independent states.
